A teenage boy has emerged as a remarkable hero after courageously swimming for four hours to rescue his family from a perilous situation off the southwestern coast of Australia. This incredible act of bravery involved 13-year-old Austin Appelbee, who navigated through treacherous waters to seek help after his family was swept away by strong winds.
Austin and his family, which includes his mother Joanne, 47, his brother Beau, 12, and his sister Grace, 8, were enjoying a day on inflatable paddle boards and a kayak at Geographe Bay when unexpected strong gusts pushed them far from shore. According to police reports, when their kayak began to take on water, Austin attempted to paddle back but quickly realized that he needed to take more drastic measures. He decided to leave the kayak behind, remove his life jacket, and swim the remaining distance to land in a desperate effort to alert authorities.
Throughout his grueling four-hour swim in rough seas, Austin maintained a positive mindset. "The waves are massive and I have no life jacket on. I just kept thinking 'just keep swimming, just keep swimming,’" he recounted on Tuesday. After finally reaching the shore, he collapsed from exhaustion but immediately called for help.
Joanne Appelbee, speaking to the media, shared the heart-wrenching moment when she made the difficult decision to send her son for help. "One of the hardest decisions I ever had to make was to say to Austin: 'Try and get to shore and get some help. This could get really serious really quickly,’" she explained to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Her initial confidence in his ability to reach safety began to wane as darkness fell and they remained unrescued, though they tried to keep spirits high by singing and joking until the sea conditions worsened.
Austin’s brave actions initiated a significant search-and-rescue operation that involved Western Australia Water Police, volunteer marine rescue teams, and the state's rescue helicopter. The Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group commended Austin’s remarkable endurance and bravery, stating, "The bravery, strength and courage shown by this family were extraordinary, especially the young fella who swam 4km to raise the alarm."
The incident took place near Quindalup, a small coastal area located approximately 250 kilometers south of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Paul Bresland, the commander of the volunteer marine rescue group, described Austin's effort as "superhuman," noting that for the first part of his swim, he wore a life jacket before deciding to remove it due to challenges he faced in the water.
Thanks to Austin’s detailed description of the kayak and paddle boards, rescuers quickly located the kayak within an hour. Around 8:30 PM, the rescue helicopter spotted Austin’s family clinging to a paddle board approximately 14 kilometers off the coast. After enduring up to ten hours in the water, they were safely brought back to shore by a volunteer rescue vessel.
The Appelbee family were on vacation, having rented kayaks and paddle boards from their hotel earlier that day when the conditions turned dangerous. Despite being in the water for several hours under difficult circumstances, they managed to stay together, thanks in large part to Joanne’s resolve. Police inspector James Bradley highlighted Austin’s determination and courage, stating, "The actions of the 13-year-old boy cannot be praised highly enough – his determination and courage ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings."
Bresland remarked on Joanne’s remarkable strength as she struggled against fatigue to keep her children close during their ordeal. By the time rescuers reached them, the three children were shivering, and Beau had lost feeling in his legs due to the cold. "I have three babies. All three made it. That was all that mattered," Joanne expressed with relief.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how swiftly conditions at sea can change. Thankfully, all family members were wearing life jackets, which played a crucial role in their survival. The police emphasized the importance of safety measures, reiterating that such preparedness can make a significant difference in emergency situations.
After being assessed by St John WA paramedics, the family was taken to Busselton Health Campus for further checks and later discharged. They returned to express their gratitude to the volunteers who helped in their rescue.
