Artificial Intelligence: A Double-Edged Sword for Employment
The UK's technology secretary, Liz Kendall, has issued a stark warning about the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, stating, 'I want to be transparent with the public. Some jobs will be lost due to AI.'
In a speech outlining the government's strategy to manage the effects of AI on the British economy, Kendall acknowledged the concerns surrounding AI's potential to disrupt the job market, particularly in sectors like law and finance, where graduate entry jobs are at risk. However, she assured the public that new opportunities will emerge.
Kendall emphasized the government's commitment to upskilling the workforce, aiming to train up to 10 million British workers in basic AI skills by 2030. This initiative, she claimed, would be the most significant plan to enhance the nation's skills since the establishment of the Open University under Harold Wilson's leadership.
The government's strategy also includes the creation of a 'future of work unit' within the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, involving trade unions and business leaders. This unit will focus on adapting the workforce to the changing demands of the labor market.
Despite the potential benefits, there are concerns about the reliance on US AI companies, whose models may compete with British white-collar workers. A $1 million donation from Mark Zuckerberg's Meta is being utilized to develop AI systems for defense, national security, and transport, raising questions about the balance between innovation and job displacement.
Anthropic, a US AI startup valued at $350 billion, has been chosen to create a dedicated assistant tool for public services on gov.uk, starting with a career advice model for job seekers. This collaboration is provided free of charge.
The government's relationship with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is also noteworthy. However, the potential job displacement caused by AI advancements remains a critical issue, prompting discussions on the need for a comprehensive approach to reskilling and upskilling the workforce.
