Babar Azam's BBL Drama: The Story Behind the Dressing Room Snub (2026)

The situation surrounding cricket star Babar Azam’s recent outburst during a Big Bash League (BBL) match has taken an intriguing turn, particularly after reports emerged that he felt "disrespected" by fellow teammate Steve Smith. This incident unfolded when Azam chose to isolate himself in the locker room rather than join his Sydney Sixers teammates in greeting their opponents, the Sydney Thunder, following their match.

The backdrop to this drama was a pivotal moment in the game where Smith opted not to take a single that would have allowed Azam to continue batting. Instead, Smith decided to keep the strike for the upcoming power surge, a critical phase of the game where fewer fielders are allowed on the boundary, which often leads to high-scoring opportunities.

During the Sixers' successful five-wicket victory, Azam's frustration became evident. After being dismissed for a respectable 47 runs off 39 balls, he reportedly felt disrespected by Smith's decision to decline the single at the end of the 11th over. Smith subsequently went on to score an impressive 32 runs in the ensuing power surge, capitalizing on his choice to take the strike.

However, Azam seemed far from celebratory; he notably refrained from acknowledging Smith’s remarkable performance before the latter was dismissed on the very next ball he faced. In a fit of frustration, Azam struck the boundary rope with his bat as he left the field, prompting criticism from Australian cricket legend Mark Waugh. Waugh remarked, "Whatever you’re feeling, you don’t show that. It’s not a good look for the team environment."

Waugh was also vocal about Azam’s behavior after the match, pointing out that it didn’t present a positive image. He commented, "Babar refused to come out and shake hands. He was gone for the night. I don’t know where he was… it wasn’t a good look."

Former Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin acknowledged that Azam was clearly unhappy playing second fiddle to Smith in that moment. Haddin explained that Smith's decision to prioritize his own strike was a tactical move, stating, "(Babar) needs to be happy – that’s a smart tactical move there."

As Smith began the power surge by hitting four consecutive sixes off Ryan Hadley, Azam’s demeanor remained unchanged. Haddin pointed out, "Babar shouldn’t be upset – it’s Steve Smith’s role. He hasn’t congratulated Smith once! He’s not happy. I don’t think he spoke to him during that surge."

In fact, Waugh went so far as to describe Azam as merely a "decoration" given the dominant role Smith was taking on. He stated, "You only need one batsman here."

Both Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist expressed agreement with the sentiments that Azam had misstepped. Vaughan highlighted the difficult choices inherent in team sports, asserting that Smith acted correctly in that moment, while Gilchrist lamented Azam’s display of frustration. He noted, "In front of some young kids learning about sportsmanship and teamwork, he put on that display. That’s disappointing. Babar Azam is a class act and has been a great addition to the tournament this year. It’s unfortunate that this incident overshadowed his contributions. But kudos to Smith for seizing the moment for his team."

After posting a record-equalling second-fastest century in BBL history, Smith reflected on the fallout from his decision, acknowledging, "I’m not sure Babar was too happy with me knocking back that single though," as he accepted his man of the match award.

Former Sixers player Steve O’Keefe defended Smith’s choice, explaining that Azam is not primarily known for his power-hitting capabilities, which was evident during the crucial power surge. O’Keefe emphasized, "This guy hits the ball better than anyone through the off side. It’s clear he looked disappointed that Steve Smith knocked him back for that single. But it was a selfless move from Steve, and he certainly proved his point by scoring over 30 runs. Still, it’s clear that Babar wasn’t too pleased about it."

What do you think? Should Azam have reacted differently in this situation? Is it understandable for athletes to feel frustrated when their teammates make decisions that impact their performance? Join the discussion and share your thoughts!
