The Women's Super League title race seems to be slipping away from Chelsea, but is it truly over?
Sonia Bompastor, the manager of Chelsea, has expressed that the Women's Super League title is "probably gone" for her team following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. This loss has left the reigning champions a significant six points behind the current league leaders, Manchester City, who also have a game in hand. It's a stark contrast to seasons past where Chelsea often dictated the pace, but this year, Manchester City is the team consistently setting the standard.
Manchester City, currently on an impressive streak of 11 consecutive league wins, are in a commanding position. If they manage to secure a victory against London City Lionesses on Sunday, they could extend their lead to a formidable nine points. Bompastor acknowledged the challenging situation, stating, "We know the title race is probably gone, but our mentality is to fight until the very end. Now we have to focus on staying in second." This shift in focus comes as Chelsea prepares to face Manchester City themselves next weekend at the Etihad Stadium.
But here's where it gets interesting... While Chelsea's scoring has been less prolific this season – with 24 league goals in 13 games compared to 38 at the same stage last year – their defense, though still the best in the WSL, has shown cracks. They've conceded eight goals, two more than last season, and are keeping fewer clean sheets (six this season versus nine last year). These numbers are reflected in their on-pitch performances.
Remember the opening night of the season? Chelsea kicked off their title defense with a triumphant 2-1 win over Manchester City. It felt like a statement, suggesting they would once again be the team to beat. Bompastor's side displayed that characteristic ruthlessness, but it hasn't been a consistent theme since. Early in the season, they secured nervy wins, but a subsequent run of three draws in four games stalled their momentum. At that point, with nine games played, Manchester City's lead was only three points. However, a 1-0 home defeat to a struggling Everton proved to be a major blow. This was Bompastor's first league loss since taking over from Emma Hayes in the summer of 2024, and it ended Chelsea's remarkable 34-game unbeaten league run. That loss handed City a six-point advantage, which they carried into the winter break.
After a strong start to 2026 with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham, Chelsea faltered again, this time losing to their London rivals, Arsenal. Former Chelsea midfielder Fara Williams aptly summarized the performance on BBC One: "Chelsea just didn't turn up."
And this is the part most people miss... With the title race seemingly out of their hands, Chelsea might now turn their attention to the Champions League, a major trophy that has eluded them. England's record goalscorer, Ellen White, suggested this could be a tempting focus, noting, "Six points away, the title is a tough one. It's really hard to think about City slipping up. The Champions League is a huge one for them and they are into the quarter-finals. They need to focus on themselves."
However, Bompastor's comments about the title being "probably gone" could be more than just a simple concession. It might be a strategic move, a form of media mind games. Her predecessor, Emma Hayes, famously employed a similar tactic after a 4-3 loss to Liverpool in May 2024. At that time, Chelsea faced a six-point deficit with only three games remaining, yet they went on to win the league on the final day, surpassing Manchester City on goal difference. With nine games left in the current season, it's perhaps too early to definitively declare the title race over, regardless of what Bompastor says. There's still ample opportunity for Chelsea to find their form and for Manchester City to experience a stumble.
For now, all eyes are on the crucial clash between the top two teams next Sunday in east Manchester. What do you think? Is the WSL title race truly decided, or could Chelsea pull off a remarkable comeback? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
