The Future of Fitness: A New Gym's Impact on an Iconic Tunnel System
In a move that has sparked both excitement and concern, plans for a David Lloyd gym in the Wirral Waters area are set to be decided soon. But here's where it gets controversial: the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has raised objections, citing potential issues with the nearby Mersey Tunnels.
The proposal, submitted by David Lloyd Leisure, Europe's largest health and fitness company, envisions a vibrant new club amidst the ongoing regeneration of the docks between Birkenhead and Wallasey. If approved, this gym will rise from the former Bidston Dock, offering a range of amenities and creating 100 new jobs.
A Leisure Hub in the Making
Peel Waters, the developer behind Wirral Waters, describes the new club as a six-acre haven. It promises three all-weather tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, spas, sports halls, a gym, a children's play area, and a café. Additionally, David Lloyd's plans include six padel courts, a popular racket sport with Mexican origins.
The plans are scheduled for a Wirral Council planning meeting on January 29, with councillors recommended to approve the application, subject to certain conditions.
Support and Objections
Bidston councillor Liz Grey supports the plans, emphasizing the benefits of exercise and inquiring about potential discounts for locals. However, not everyone is on board. The Wirral Wildlife Trust seeks further information on botanical, invertebrate, and reptile surveys, while the Liverpool City Region objects based on potential drainage impacts that could affect the Mersey Tunnels.
Interestingly, key organizations like the local flood authority, Environment Agency, Natural England, United Utilities, and highways have raised no objections. The council report acknowledges the need to offset any nature loss on-site with investments elsewhere.
Addressing Flood Concerns
The report highlights historical drainage issues, with water from the Wallasey Tunnel once draining into Bidston Dock. Despite concerns about flooding, a solution has been found, and officers believe the development will have a positive impact, providing health benefits for members.
The local authority is keen to see the site developed, assuring that the plans won't negatively affect the wider Wirral Waters area or Birkenhead town centre. It welcomes initiatives to encourage gym usage.
A New Chapter for Wirral Waters
The report describes the development as a series of high-quality leisure buildings, bringing life to a vacant site for many years. Stuart Caswell, New Clubs Acquisition Director at David Lloyd Leisure, expressed delight at their involvement, stating their plan enhances the area, creates jobs, and caters to the needs of locals.
So, will this gym bring much-needed vitality to the area, or will it pose a risk to the iconic Mersey Tunnels? What do you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
