Woodfibre LNG, a project that's been steadily taking shape in Squamish, is now over 60% complete, and the recent delivery of two massive modules marks a significant milestone.

But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, a point of discussion for the environmentally conscious.

Over the weekend, the HTV Seaway Swan, a specialized heavy transport vessel, docked at the Woodfibre LNG site, carrying two crucial components: the pretreatment module and the process utility module. These modules, weighing a combined 12,300 metric tonnes and measuring over 90 meters in length, are a testament to the scale and complexity of this project.

The pretreatment module, a giant among giants, will play a critical role in ensuring the gas meets the strict specifications required for liquefaction. It's a necessary step to remove any contaminants, including moisture and trace gases, to prevent potential disruptions or damage during the liquefaction process. As Woodfibre LNG's news release points out, this is crucial, as substances like water can freeze at lower temperatures than the -162 C needed for LNG, which could lead to operational issues.

And this is the part most people miss: the process utility module, a hub of activity, supports multiple aspects of the liquefied natural gas process. The HTV Seaway Swan, a semi-submersible vessel, was built with a purpose. Its unique design allows for the loading and unloading of oversized cargo, making it the perfect choice for transporting these massive modules. With a capacity to accommodate 48 people and a Norwegian International Ship Register flag, it's a vessel that's both functional and impressive.

Once the modules were inspected and the sea welds cut, the real work began. Self-propelled modular transporters were used to carefully unload and position these giants, a testament to the precision and expertise required in such a delicate operation.
