The pressure to keep up with the phenomenal talent of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner took a toll on British tennis star Jack Draper, leading to an arm injury that sidelined him for most of the 2025 season. But here's where it gets controversial: Draper believes his intense drive to match these rising stars contributed to his injury.
On Wednesday, Draper made a triumphant return to the court after a five-month hiatus, defeating Viktor Durasovic 6-2, 6-2 in the Davis Cup match against Norway in Oslo. Despite the injury, the 24-year-old remains optimistic, believing he's returned as an even stronger player, ready to challenge the Spanish and Italian duopoly at the top of men's tennis.
"Those guys are leading the sport, and I'm hungry to get to where they are," Draper told the Press Association. "I've learned a lot about myself, both mentally and physically, and I'm confident I'm a better player now than I was last summer."
Draper's journey back to the court hasn't been easy. After a second-round defeat at Wimbledon, he was diagnosed with a complex bone bruising injury in his left arm. "It's not something I'd wish on any tennis player," he said. "But I've learned a lot from this period, both personally and professionally, and I believe it will make me a stronger player."
Draper's initial plan was to return to singles competition at the Rotterdam Open next week, but he has since withdrawn. "I'm disappointed not to be back yet, but I'm trending in the right direction," he explained.
And this is the part most people miss: Draper's coach, Leon Smith, revealed that the plan was always for Draper to play just one match against Norway. "It was the sensible decision, given the circumstances and his medical team's advice," Smith said.
So, what's next for Draper? He'll continue his recovery and prepare for the second qualifying round of the Davis Cup later this year, where Great Britain will face either Australia or Ecuador for a spot in the November finals.
