NBL Drama: Kings Apologize, but Bogut Sticks to His Guns (2026)

A heated debate is brewing in the NBL, with tensions rising after a public spat between the Sydney Kings and Adelaide 36ers. The Kings' assistant coach and minority owner, Andrew Bogut, sparked controversy with his comments on social media, questioning Adelaide's leadership and prompting a strong response.

The Battle for Respect and Rivalry in the NBL

Bogut's X post, following Adelaide's loss to the South East Melbourne Phoenix, ignited a firestorm. He expressed surprise at the league's dynamics, suggesting it was unusual for a team in first place to consider firing its head coach.

"It's an odd situation where a team's leaders discuss replacing their coach while sitting pretty at the top of the NBL ladder, with only a few games left before the playoffs!" Bogut's social media post read.

The Kings have since apologized to Adelaide, but notably, Bogut himself has not.

"The Kings' coaching staff, excluding Bogut, have apologized directly to 36ers GM Matt Weston," reported Will Crouch of 9 News Adelaide on X.

However, sources close to Fox Sports Australia claim Bogut has refused to issue a personal apology.

This incident is expected to be a hot topic at the upcoming NBL owners' meeting, where discussions may include the potential introduction of an ownership code of conduct.

Adelaide has strongly denied rumors of a "crisis meeting" following their loss to the Phoenix.

"I can confirm this is categorically false. The 36ers have had no crisis talks with Mike Wells, and I'm told he has the full support of the ownership," Crouch reported.

"It's understood 36ers management has officially complained to Sydney about Bogut's comments."

Grant Kelley, owner of the 36ers, addressed the situation on The FIVEAA Sports Show.

"Andrew Bogut tweeted something about two hours ago, which I won't repeat, but it's unfortunate for an assistant coach of another club to do so," Kelley told FiveAA.

"We wouldn't allow our assistant coaches, or anyone in our organization, to comment on another club."

Kelley questioned the timing of the reports, given the club's strong position in the league.

"We're 21-8, and while we acknowledge we haven't had the best month, our record speaks for itself. It's the best club record since the Sydney Olympics."

Before Mike Wells' appointment, the 36ers had gone through four coaches in five seasons. Wells has led the team to success, with 13 wins and a sixth-place finish in his first year.

With 21 wins and four games remaining, Kelley is confident in Wells' future.

"There's no way we'd consider any change for Mike, given his record. It's disrespectful and not how this club operates."

Kelley emphasized that the club's leadership meets regularly to address challenges, but these meetings are about strengthening the club, not replacing the coach.

"We've had some challenges, but we're a solid organization. People who have criticized us for years are now seeing our success, and it irritates them."

Kelley acknowledged recent struggles but remained optimistic about the club's direction and future.

"We're aware we haven't had the best month, but we're still on track to win the championship. We've signed players on three-year contracts to build for the future."

Despite the club's strong position, Kelley admitted the past month has been challenging.

"We've got to be better and find a way to win. We've got four games left to finish the regular season, and we believe it will be a mini playoff round for us."

For Adelaide, the focus now returns to basketball, but with the Kings and 36ers likely to meet in the finals, this saga adds fuel to an already intense rivalry.

And here's the part most people miss...

While the Kings have apologized, Bogut's refusal to do so adds a layer of controversy. Will this saga impact the upcoming games? And what does it mean for the future of the NBL?

What are your thoughts on this situation? Do you think Bogut's comments were justified, or has he crossed a line? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
