Super Bowl LX Security: Will ICE Be There or Not? The NFL Says No, But Some Are Raising Eyebrows!
Get ready for Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California! As the big game approaches, a key question on many minds is the federal security presence. NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier has stated that the security measures will be similar to those at previous Super Bowls. Crucially, she has confirmed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers will not be among the federal agencies present at Levi's Stadium. "There are no planned ICE enforcement activities. We are confident of that," Lanier assured everyone at a recent security briefing.
This reassurance comes after a series of private calls where a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official, Jeff Brannigan, reportedly indicated that ICE had no intentions of conducting any law enforcement actions during the Super Bowl week or at the game itself. This information was shared with local officials and the NFL, according to sources.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite these assurances, some are feeling a sense of unease. Why? Because of past statements made by President Donald Trump and his allies within the DHS. There's a lingering worry that minds could change as Sunday's game draws nearer. Back in October, DHS official Corey Lewandowski, a significant advisor to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, explicitly stated that ICE agents would be involved in immigration enforcement at the game. He was quite firm, saying, "There is nowhere that you can provide safe haven to people who are in the country illegally, not the Super Bowl, not anywhere else." Secretary Noem herself also remarked at that time that immigration authorities would "be all over that place."
And this is the part most people miss... When asked this week about the potential presence of federal immigration agents, a DHS spokeswoman, Tricia McLaughlin, was notably tight-lipped. She declined to confirm or deny their presence, instead offering a statement: "Those who are here legally and not breaking other laws have nothing to fear." She added, "We will not disclose future operations or discuss personnel. Super Bowl security will entail a whole-of-government response conducted in line with the U.S. Constitution."
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, however, is projecting an optimistic outlook. He expressed confidence that the event will be a success, even amidst a politically charged climate. "We are going to keep everybody safe -- our residents, our visitors," Lurie stated. "Obviously with everything going on, we're staying on top of it, monitoring everything. But I expect everything to be safe and fun."
So, the NFL says ICE won't be there, but past statements and current evasiveness from DHS have left some questioning the final word. What do you think? Should the public be more concerned about potential immigration enforcement at such a high-profile event, or is the NFL's assurance enough? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
